Question Details

Question: Hi, My name is Bill Glasgow. I am researching my family history. My Great Grandfather Robert Glasgow was born in Scotland about 1828 and shows up in the 1841 and 1851 Scotland census. He came to England between 1851 and 1861, showing up in the 1861 England census as married to Maryanne (Maclean) and living in Hereford, England. They were still living in Hereford during the 1871 census. Sometime between 1871 and the 1881 Wales census, they had moved to Penybank Farm just outside Rhayader and had 5 children (Jane, Robert, James, Janet Barr, and William my Grandfather)and a hosiery business. My Great Grandfather Robert Glasgow died on May 12, 1885. One of Robert and Maryanne's daughters Janet Barr Glasgow married John Jones in 1888 and by the 1891 Wales census, Mother Maryanne and Janet & John Jones were the only family members still living at Penybank Farm and John Jones was the tailor and draper running the business. During the 1901 census, I did not find Maryanne Glasgow (my Great Great Grandmother) but John and Janet Jones were living in Rhayader. Not sure if they had severed ties to Penybank Farm. I noticed Google Earth that Penybank Farm is still there. I would like to contact the people living there now and find out if they have any links to my ancestors. Any help you can provide would be most appreciated. Thank you! Bill Glasgow

Answer: Dear Mr Glasgow,

I used Google Maps http://maps.google.co.uk/ to search for Penybank farm which gave me two results in the area above Rhayader. These provide contact details. One is called Bound Hywel, Penybank while the other is called Penybanc and is close to the A470 out of Rhayader. I presume the farm you talk about is one of these. I cannot find the farms listed in the  BT 'Phone directory. The National Archives have a website concerning National Farm Surveys of England and Wales 1940 -43, available at;
 http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/research-guides/farm-survey.htm
..which may be of some help.

I wish you luck with your research.

Kind Regards,

Answer: Thank you for your kind response. I too have seen the two locations you provided when I search Google Earth. There is also a location actually called Penybank Farm about 1.5 miles east of Rhayader on a country road off Highway A44. This seems like a more likely location for my Great Grandfather's farm. The information given next to the location is: Penybank Farm Rhayader LD6 5NY, United Kingdom Is this a mailing address? I would also be most appreciative if you could direct me to any local history ro genealogical groups or societies. Thanks again for your help. Much Appreciated! Bill Glasgow

Answer: Dear Mr Glasgow,
Yes, that would be a mailing address, and with the postcode to denote the area, and the name of the farm, mail should get through.

As Powys is mid -Wales, and we are located in South Wales, I cannot recommend first-hand any local societies. However, after a little more research I would suggest that the following web links would almost certainly be useful to you:

http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~wlspfhs/ - is a link to the Powys Family History Society, and
http://www.powys.gov.uk/index.php?id=785&L=0 -  contains many very  other links relevant to your enquiry.

Kind Regards,
